named in honor of the hometown of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence

In December, 1833, the town was platted

Incorporated in 174

March 20, 1871 charter was approved

John Standley was the first settler, made the first improvements, and donated the site for the courthouse.

George W. Folger located there in 1832 and became the first physician

Mrs. Nancy Folger was the first teacher

Joseph Dickson was appointed the first postmaster in 1834
